Stara Remiza - Old Fire Station- Centre of heritage and creative activity, exhibition and history of Zachełmie embroidery, handicraft products.
Stara Remiza, or Centre of Heritage and Creative Activity in the village Zachełmie, is the smallest free-standing cultural centre in Poland. It was created by villagers to showcase the unique historical, natural and cultural values of their village. In the Old Fire Station, you can see the only exhibition in Poland dedicated to the embroidery created in the village of Zachełmie - a unique art of cloth decoration, initiated by German villagers in the 1920s and 1930s. Before the war, embroidery was mainly made for shirts (the famous Saalberger Hemden), which were worn at various ceremonies. The patterns survived in the attic of the house of one of the co-creators of embroidery - and after several decades they started to regain popularity. The current residents wear not only embroidered shirts, but also bands and bags or... key chains. The Karkonosze Zachełmie Association, which manages the Old Fire Station, is taking care of this heritage. The Old Fire Station is not only about exhibitions and workshops inside - it is also an observation tower, from which you can admire Zachełmie and part of the Jelenia Góra Valley. The tower was reconstructed during the renovation - the original one was used by firemen as a lookout tower. It is open to the public 24/7. The Old Fire Station in Zachełmie is open on weekends from April to September from 10:00am to 4:00pm. On weekdays, the building is open to organized groups (at least 5 persons) - please e-mail us at skz@zachelmie.eu.
